Terms of Use

Last updated: 5 October 2026

These terms describe the conditions for using The Standard website, reading our journalism and interacting with our services. Please use the site responsibly and respect the rights of others.

The publisher and these terms

This website is operated for The Standard Newspaper, published by XL Standard Co. Ltd. in The Gambia. These terms apply to the website at new.standard.gm. Using the website is subject to these terms and applicable law. If you do not agree, please discontinue use.

The Privacy Policy explains how information is handled. Additional conditions for a separately offered subscription, promotion, purchase or other service will be provided with that service and apply to it. These terms do not create a subscription or payment obligation merely because you read a story.

Reading and sharing our journalism

You may read and share links to publicly accessible stories for personal use. When quoting material, identify The Standard and link to the original story. Use quotations only to the extent permitted by applicable law or the rights holder's permission.

Articles, photographs, video, graphics, design and branding are protected by intellectual property rights belonging to the publisher or their respective owners. Republishing whole articles, reproducing images or distributing substantial parts of our content normally requires prior permission, unless an applicable legal exception permits it. Credit alone is not a substitute for permission.

Commercial syndication, bulk extraction, resale and use of protected content for training artificial intelligence systems require appropriate permission unless permitted by applicable law. Ordinary search engine indexing and linking do not grant permission to republish the underlying work.

Responsible use

Do not misuse the website or interfere with access for other readers. You must not:

  • Attempt unauthorised access, bypass access controls or exploit a security weakness.
  • Introduce malicious code, overload the service or use automated tools in a way that disrupts it.
  • Impersonate others, misrepresent your identity or send fraudulent enquiries.
  • Submit unlawful threats, harassment, defamatory allegations, unlawful personal disclosures or material infringing another person's rights.
  • Use this website in a way that violates applicable law.

Editorial content and corrections

News develops over time. Stories may be updated, corrected or supplemented as new information becomes available. Publication dates, quotations, analysis and context should be read together. Opinions and contributed articles express their authors' views and do not necessarily represent the publisher's position.

If you believe a report contains a factual error, send the article URL, the statement concerned, a clear explanation and any supporting information. Requests for correction, a response or a right of reply will be considered in light of the facts, editorial standards and applicable law.

Our journalism provides information and discussion; it is not a substitute for personal legal, medical, financial or other professional advice.

Letters, tips and other submissions

If you send a letter, news tip or other material, you should have the right to provide it and should explain any restrictions on its use. For material offered for publication, you authorise The Standard to review, edit for clarity and length, and publish it in connection with its journalism. You retain any rights you own. We do not promise publication, payment or exclusivity unless separately agreed.

Do not send confidential material through an ordinary web form or email on the assumption that it is a secure channel. Discuss confidentiality and a suitable way to communicate with the newsroom before sending sensitive documents. An unsolicited submission does not itself create a confidentiality agreement.

Where comments or other interactive features are available, submissions may be moderated or removed. Moderation should not be understood as a guarantee that every submitted claim is verified.

Availability and responsibility

We aim to keep the website useful and accessible, but access may be interrupted by maintenance, network conditions or events outside our control. Content and features may change. We cannot promise uninterrupted access or that every item remains current at every moment.

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the website is provided without guarantees beyond those required by law. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, limits mandatory consumer rights or removes remedies available under applicable law. The publisher remains responsible to the extent the law requires.

Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of The Gambia, subject to any mandatory protections that apply to a reader in another jurisdiction. Courts with lawful jurisdiction may hear disputes. These terms do not impose compulsory arbitration or prevent a complaint to a competent regulator.

Please contact us first about a concern so that we have an opportunity to understand and address it. This does not suspend any legal deadline or require you to give up a statutory remedy.

Changes and contact

We may update these terms as the website develops. The revision date appears above. Changes apply prospectively, subject to applicable law and any notice required for a material change. Existing paid arrangements, if any, remain subject to their own agreed terms.

For questions about these terms, licensing or use of the website, email [email protected] with the relevant subject and details.
