The Democratic Party (DP) has terminated its political alliance with the National People’s Party (NPP), saying its values, beliefs and political objectives no longer align with those of the ruling party.
The decision was announced by DP leader Professor Dr Yusupha Dumbuya in a statement as political parties continue to position themselves ahead of the December 2026 presidential election.
Dumbuya said the decision followed “careful consideration, reflection, and consultation,” stressing that political partnerships must be built around shared values, common beliefs and a collective sense of purpose.
“Over time, I have come to the realisation that my values, beliefs, and political objectives no longer align with those of the National People’s Party,” he said.
He said remaining in an alliance where fundamental political differences existed would not be consistent with his convictions or the direction he wants to pursue.
Dumbuya, however, said the decision was not based on personal animosity or disrespect towards NPP leaders, members or supporters.
He said: “This marks the end of my alliance with the National People’s Party, but it does not mark the end of my commitment to the people and the principles I stand for.”
