The Unite Movement for Change UMC and the National Unity Party (NUP) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formalising a political alliance ahead of December 5th, 2026 presidential election, with both parties expressing confidence that the partnership will unseat President Adama Barrow.
The signing ceremony, held at Paradise Suites Hotel, brought together executive members and supporters of both parties. Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda and Lamin J Darbo signed for their respective parties.
Addressing the gathering, Bensouda described the agreement as more than a political pact, saying it was built on shared constitutional values rather than political convenience.
“This MoU is not founded on political convenience or electoral arithmetic. It is founded on the conviction that political parties have a duty to work together whenever the national interest demands it,” he said.
He added that the alliance was committed to constitutional governance, democratic accountability, the independence of public institutions and the rule of law.
Bensouda also said the alliance would focus on addressing what he called the “Three Cs” – the rising cost of living, crime and corruption.
“We are fighting the rising cost of living, and crime so that every Gambian can live in a safe environment, and fighting corruption because it steals from hospitals, schools, young people and public institutions,” he said.
He urged supporters of both parties to embrace the partnership and work together in communities across the country, adding that Gambians were looking for leaders who could deliver results rather than political rhetoric.
For his part, Lamin J Darbo of the NUP declared that the alliance would defeat President Barrow in December and form the next government.
“I know this gathering here today is sending shock waves to the State House. By the time we reach December, it will be absolutely clear who the winners of the 2026 elections will be, and that will be the UMC-NUP alliance,” he said.
Darbo said the coalition would offer a different style of leadership centred on respect for citizens, responsible management of public resources and improved living standards. He also called on other opposition parties to join the alliance, arguing that a united opposition stood the best chance of defeating the incumbent government. Darbo concluded by declaring that Barrow is fortunate to spend 10 years in power but the time has come for him to pack his bags because they are coming to take over in December ..
