President Adama Barrow has hit back at opposition leader Ousainu Darboe over his claim that he would not win the December 2026 presidential election even if he were to open the vaults of Central Bank and spent the money on electioneering.
Barrow made this remark during the ongoing Meet The People Tour meeting in Taibatu, Upper River Region.
He dismissed Darboe’s statement arguing that his victories in the 2016 and 2021 elections showed he could defeat his opponents without relying on money from the Central Bank.
“I’ve heard him say that even if I take money from the Central Bank, I will not win the election, and he will win it. But I’ll give him a curt response. The candidate [President Yahya Jammeh] I defeated in 2016 had the keys to the Central Bank. He had the police, marabouts, witches and jinns, yet I beat him! Can a knife that killed an elephant, fail to slaughter a chicken? And he [Darboe] should know that in 2021, I didn’t take money from the Central Bank but I still beat him,” Barrow waxed lyrically.
The president said contrary to the forecast of the Doubting Thomases, he will perform better in the upcoming election. He cited “massive support” for him in the north bank, and upper river regions including the Wulis.
Barrow criticised Darboe’s political appeal and said no one can pull the wool over the faces of voters in rural Gambia.
“The people have opened their eyes. No one can fool the Gambian electorate this time around,” he chirped.
